Habemus Papam! We Have A Pope



Thousands cheered in St. Paul's Square at the sight of the symbolic white smoke, announcing that a successor to Benedict XVI had finally been chosen after two days of intense voting. 

 Habemus Papam! is the announcement given in Latin by the Cardinal Protodeacon, the senior Cardinal Deacon, upon the election of a new pope.

Annuntio vobis gaudium magnum:
Habemus Papam;
Eminentissimum ac reverendissimum Dominum,
Dominum Jorge Sanctæ Romanæ Ecclesiæ Cardinalem Bergolio,
Qui sibi nomen imposuit Francis.




Jorge Mario Bergoglio, was born December 17, 1936.

Prior to his election, he served as an Argentine cardinal of the Roman Catholic Church.  He served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires since 1998. He was elevated to the cardinalte in 2001. He was elevated to Pope in March 2013.
