12 Dead In Masacare At Ft. Hood

I just got home and learned of this horrendous situation. An officer who was getting ready to deploy to Iraq opened fire on Ft. Hood today. At this moment 12 people are dead and 31 are wounded. The gunman was killed by a civilian police officer who was also killed. Originally two other people were picked up as suspects, however, it turned out they were trying to stop the violence. A third suspect has been taken in for questioning.

The shooting took place 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the post's Soldier Readiness Center, where soldiers undergo medical screening before being deployed or after returning from overseas.

The base and area schools were on lock down after the mass shooting, and all those on the Army post were asked to gather for a head count.

The name of the shooter has been released on KDFW. He is Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan. Hasan, said to be in his 30s, is allegedly responsible for opening fire at about 1:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Killeen, Texas post. According to sources, Hasan attended the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda, MD. He graduated in 2003 with a degree in Osteopathy and later finished his residency as a psychiatrist.

In 2009, Hasan completed a fellowship in Disaster and Preventive Psychiatry at the Center for Traumatic Stress.

According to spokesman Lt. Gen Bob Cone from Fort Hood, the suspect was armed with two handguns.

An unidentified official says investigators are trying to determine if Hasan was his birth name, or if he changed his name and converted to the Islamic faith at some point in his life.
